O Brasil tem uma \u00e1rea de 8.514.877 km\u00b2. A popula\u00e7\u00e3o atual \u00e9 de 203.429.773. De acordo com o Censo do ano 2000, quando a popula\u00e7\u00e3o era de 184 milh\u00f5es, os povos ind\u00edgenas tinham uma popula\u00e7\u00e3o de 734.000 pessoas, ou seja, 0,4% da popula\u00e7\u00e3o brasileira. Hoje em dia a Funda\u00e7\u00e3o Nacional do \u00cdndio (FUNAI) agora indica a exist\u00eancia de mais de 800.000 \u00edndios. O Brasil \u00e9 um dos pa\u00edses com maior diversidade \u00e9tnica, sendo que existem 241 Povos Ind\u00edgenas no territ\u00f3rio brasileiro.<\/p>\n

De acordo com o Conselho Indigenista Mission\u00e1rio (CIMI), existem 1.024 terras ind\u00edgenas, das quais 400 est\u00e3o tituladas (registradas, \u201creservadas\u201d e \u201cconstitu\u00eddas como terras ind\u00edgenas\u201d); 129 em processo de titula\u00e7\u00e3o (identificadas, declaradas ou homologadas) e 495 terras ind\u00edgenas sem t\u00edtulo (a serem reconhecidas, sem a\u00e7\u00f5es, com restri\u00e7\u00f5es, exclu\u00eddas). As terras ind\u00edgenas tituladas e em processo de certifica\u00e7\u00e3o abrangem 1.105.258 km 2, ou seja 13% da \u00e1rea total. Segundo o Instituto Socioambiental (ISA), de 988 terras habitadas por povos ind\u00edgenas, 323 est\u00e3o sem nenhuma defini\u00e7\u00e3o jur\u00eddica e 146 est\u00e3o em estudo, ainda sem serem identificadas como Terras Ind\u00edgenas. Em rela\u00e7\u00e3o \u00e0s terras em processo de demarca\u00e7\u00e3o: 20 est\u00e3o identificadas, 60 est\u00e3o declaradas, 35 j\u00e1 foram homologadas e 366 est\u00e3o registradas. O Brasil tem 305 \u00e1reas protegidas, o que representa 7,6% do territ\u00f3rio nacional. Destas, 79 se sobrep\u00f5em com terras ind\u00edgenas. <\/p>\n

E 2007, a Funda\u00e7\u00e3o Nacional do \u00cdndio revelou a exist\u00eancia de 67 tribos n\u00e3o contatadas, o que caracteriza o Brasil como o pa\u00eds com o maior n\u00famero de povos em isolamento volunt\u00e1rio do mundo.<\/p>\n
