H\u00e1 5 s\u00e9culos atr\u00e1s, antes da Conquista, 10 milh\u00f5es de \u00edndios viviam no Brasil. Desde a chegada dos Portugueses iniciou-se um processo de ocupa\u00e7\u00e3o das terras ind\u00edgenas. Por causa do impacto desse processo, muitos povos ind\u00edgenas extinguiram-se por completo e os povos da costa se refugiaram no interior da Amaz\u00f4nia. Este processo durou at\u00e9 o in\u00edcio do s\u00e9culo XX.<\/p>\n
No final do s\u00e9culo XIX, durante o \u201cboom da borracha\u201d os bar\u00f5es exploraram impiedosamente os ind\u00edgenas Amaz\u00f4nicos.<\/p>\n

Entre 1960 e 1980, os governos militares impulsionaram a industrializa\u00e7\u00e3o do pa\u00eds atrav\u00e9s de projetos que implicaram na invas\u00e3o de territ\u00f3rios ind\u00edgenas. Em 1967 o governo criou a Funda\u00e7\u00e3o Nacional do \u00cdndio (FUNAI), com a miss\u00e3o de \u201cintegrar o \u00edndio, a um curto prazo de tempo, para o mesmo n\u00e3o prejudicar o desenvolvimento nacional\u201d, e desde ent\u00e3o, o Estado se constituiu como tutor legal dos \u00edndios. Em 1973, foi sancionado o Estatuto do \u00cdndio que caracterizava os \u00edndios em \u201cisolados, em vias de integra\u00e7\u00e3o e integrados\u201d. Os primeiros foram considerados \u201csilv\u00edcolas\u201d e continuaram sob a tutela da FUNAI at\u00e9 o ano de 2008. Entre os anos 70 e 90, muitos \u00edndios foram expulsos de suas terras para dar lugar a represas, minas, estradas e fazendas de gado.<\/p>\n
En 1973 se sancion\u00f3 el Estatuto del Indio, que divid\u00eda a los ind\u00edgenas en \u201caislados\u201d, en \u201cv\u00edas de integraci\u00f3n\u201d e \u201cintegrados\u201d. Los primeros eran considerados \u201csilv\u00edcolas\u201d, y continuaron bajo la tutela del FUNAI hasta el a\u00f1o 2008. Entre los a\u00f1os \u201870 y \u201890, muchos ind\u00edgenas fueron expulsados de sus territorios para abrir paso a represas, minas, carreteras y haciendas ganaderas. <\/p>\n
Em 1977 realizou-se a primeira Assembl\u00e9ia Ind\u00edgena Nacional e tr\u00eas anos mais tarde foi criada a primeira organiza\u00e7\u00e3o ind\u00edgena do Brasil: a Uni\u00e3o das Na\u00e7\u00f5es Ind\u00edgenas (UNI). Entretanto, o governo declarou que n\u00e3o permitiria e nem apoiaria essa organiza\u00e7\u00e3o. <\/p>\n
Em1980 foram criadas as \u00abTerras Ind\u00edgenas\u00bb, que segundo a legisla\u00e7\u00e3o brasileira, s\u00e3o aquelas terras tradicionalmente ocupadas pelos povos ind\u00edgenas que as habitavam em car\u00e1ter permanente ou as utilizavam para suas atividades produtivas, e que s\u00e3o essenciais para a preserva\u00e7\u00e3o dos recursos naturais ou ambientais necess\u00e1rios para o seu bem-estar e sua reprodu\u00e7\u00e3o f\u00edsica e cultural, de acordo com os seus usos, costumes e tradi\u00e7\u00f5es. (Art. 231 da Constitui\u00e7\u00e3o Federal). <\/p>\n
Quando voltou a democracia em 1988, a nova Constitui\u00e7\u00e3o Federal reconheceu os direitos dos povos ind\u00edgenas sobre as terras que os mesmos originalmente ocupavam \u201ccompetindo \u00e0 Uni\u00e3o demarc\u00e1-las, proteg\u00ea-las e respeit\u00e1-las\u201d. <\/p>\n
Com a chegada de Lula da Silva \u00e0 presid\u00eancia em 2002, o Brasil ratificou a Conven\u00e7\u00e3o n\u00ba 169 da OIT, com isso esperava-se um aumento no processo de demarca\u00e7\u00e3o de terras ind\u00edgenas. Entretanto, a recusa do presidente em ratificar a terra Raposa Serra do Sol, deixou claro que isso n\u00e3o iria ocorrer [Para saber mais sobre o caso consulte Haz click Aqu\u00ed]. O ent\u00e3o presidente da FUNAI declarou que \u00abos povos ind\u00edgenas do Brasil t\u00eam terra demais… estamos chegando a um ponto em que o Supremo Tribunal dever\u00e1 definir um limite.\u201d <\/p>\n
Entre 2005 e 2006 foram expulsos de suas terras 48.000 ind\u00edgenas Terena, Chamacoco, Xavante, Kadiw\u00e9u e Kaimb\u00e9, entre outros, para abrir caminho para o plantio de culturas para produ\u00e7\u00e3o de etanol.<\/p>\n

Em 2007, o governo federal criou a Agenda Social dos Povos Ind\u00edgenas e um Plano de Acelera\u00e7\u00e3o do Crescimento Ind\u00edgena, com o objetivo de demarcar 127 territ\u00f3rios ind\u00edgenas at\u00e9 2010. Mas, ao final, durante os 8 anos de governo, foram demarcados e aprovados pelo Presidente 88 territ\u00f3rios. Ao mesmo tempo, foi anunciado o Plano Hidrel\u00e9trico que prev\u00ea a constru\u00e7\u00e3o de 247 centrais na Amaz\u00f4nia, que afetam as terras ind\u00edgenas. Uma delas \u00e9 a hidrel\u00e9trica de Belo Monte no Par\u00e1, que inundar\u00e1 uma \u00e1rea de 516 km2 ao longo de 30 terras ind\u00edgenas.
