Siendo uno de lo pa\u00edses con menor superficie de la regi\u00f3n (256.370 km2) alberga parte de la mayor biodiversidad del mundo entero, la cual se concentra especialmente en la regi\u00f3n de la Amazon\u00eda. Esta regi\u00f3n representa la mitad del territorio nacional (130.035 Km\u00b2). El 38 % de la superficie del pa\u00eds es bosque h\u00famedo tropical.<\/p>\n
En la Amazon\u00eda viven 224.300 personas pertenecientes a Pueblos Ind\u00edgenas y representan el 1.64% de un total de 13.625.069 habitantes. Tambi\u00e9n se los conoce como Nacionalidades.<\/p>\n
Las Nacionalidades demandan como territorios propios una superficie de 6.308.000 hect\u00e1reas, que equivale al 25 % del territorio nacional y 64 % de la Amazon\u00eda Ecuatoriana. Hasta ahora han sido tituladas 3.703.497 hect\u00e1reas, mientras que otras 2.352.277 has est\u00e1n en posesi\u00f3n de las nacionalidades pero a\u00fan no han sido debidamente legalizados. Desde la firma del Tratado de Paz de Itamaraty (Brasilia, 1998) con el Per\u00fa, una franja fronteriza de 40 km dej\u00f3 de estar a cargo de las fuerzas armadas, y se abre la posibilidad de que sean restituidas y tituladas como parte de las tierras demandadas por los Pueblos Ind\u00edgenas.<\/p>\n
Existen 40 \u00c1reas Protegidas, que conforman el Sistema Nacional de \u00c1reas Protegidas (SNAP) regulado por el Ministerio del Ambiente, y cubren 48.077 Km2, es decir un 18,7 % de la superficie del pa\u00eds. De esas \u00e1reas, 15 se superponen con territorios ind\u00edgenas, lo que equivale al 37,5 % del total de las \u00e1reas nacionales protegidas.<\/p>\n
