Nicaragua tiene una superficie de 130.373 km2, de la que son territorios ind\u00edgenas 48.399 km2 en el Caribe, 14.003 km2 en el Centro del pa\u00eds, y 1.903 km2 en el Pac\u00edfico, totalizando un \u00e1rea de 64.305 km2, que equivale al 49.3% del pa\u00eds.<\/p>\n
En el a\u00f1o 2005, la poblaci\u00f3n total era de 5.142.098 personas, de las que 443.387 (8,6%) pertenecen a los siete Pueblos Ind\u00edgenas -Miskitu, Mayangna-Sumu, Rama, Chorotega, Nahoa, Cacaopera, y Xiu-Sutiava-; y a las dos Comunidades \u00c9tnicas afrodescendientes de Nicaragua: los Creole o Kriol, y los Garifunas (VIII Censo de Poblaci\u00f3n, 2005).<\/p>\n
El proceso de titulaci\u00f3n de los territorios ind\u00edgenas, ha sido reglamentado en el a\u00f1o 2003 a partir de la Ley 445 del R\u00e9gimen de Propiedad Comunal de los Pueblos Ind\u00edgenas y Comunidades \u00c9tnicas. Sin embargo, de acuerdo al Programa de Naciones Unidas para el Desarrollo (PNUD) en Nicaragua, hasta el 2011 se han titulado 22.452 km2, y a\u00fan son demandados alrededor de 40.000 km2. La Comisi\u00f3n Nacional de Demarcaci\u00f3n y Titulaci\u00f3n (CONADETI) ha titulado s\u00f3lo 15 de los 23 territorios demandados. Se ha propuesto concluir con este proceso en el a\u00f1o 2011.<\/p>\n
Nicaragua cuenta con 78 \u00e1reas protegidas, que cubren 22.422 km2 (17% del territorio nacional), y conforman el Sistema Nacional de \u00c1reas Protegidas. Muchas de estas \u00e1reas han sido creadas sobre territorios ind\u00edgenas La Reserva Natural de Bosawas, que cubre 20.000 km2, se traslapa con 6 territorios ind\u00edgenas de los Miskitos y Mayangnas, y cuenta con un reglamento interno de co-manejo multicomunal.<\/p>\n
