\nPueblo transfronterizo con El salvador, tambi\u00e9n conocido como Cacaopera, que en idioma Ul\u00faa, significa \u00abHuertas de Cacao\u00bb. El nombre Matagalpa, deriva de un cacique que se llam\u00f3 Atahualca. Actualmente su idioma es el espa\u00f1ol.<\/p>\n

Ubicaci\u00f3n<\/strong>
Sus territorios se encuentran en el Departamento de Matagalpa, en los municipios de Terrabona, San Dionisio, Esquipulas, San Ram\u00f3n y el propio municipio de Matagalpa. La ciudad de Matagalpa es el centro administrativo.<\/p>\n

La extensi\u00f3n territorial de los Matagalpa es de 48.000 hect\u00e1reas.<\/p>\n

Poblaci\u00f3n<\/strong>
Seg\u00fan el VIII Censo de Poblaci\u00f3n (2005), son 15.240 personas. De acuerdo a la Organizaci\u00f3n Internacional del Trabajo (OIT), en el a\u00f1o 2006 eran 98.000 personas. Se ubican mayormente en el casco urbano (93%) y un 7% en el casco rural; conformando 75 comunidades ind\u00edgenas.<\/p>\n

Organizaci\u00f3n Ind\u00edgena<\/strong>
A nivel local, en Matagalpa est\u00e1n representados como Comunidad Ind\u00edgena de Matagalpa (CIM). Tienen como autoridades un Cacique, un Alcalde de Vara y una Junta Directiva elegidos todos por el Consejo de Ancianos.
Junto a los pueblos de Jinotega, Muy Muy, S\u00e9baco y Matagalpa, conforman el Consejo Regional de Pueblos Ind\u00edgenas de la Regi\u00f3n Central \u201cCoordinadora Diriangen\u201d, con sede en Matagalpa.<\/p>\n
