La Rep\u00fablica de Panam\u00e1 tiene una superficie de 75.517 km2. El 22% de ese territorio est\u00e1 titulado como propiedad ind\u00edgena, es decir 16.751 km2. Seg\u00fan el censo del 2010, la poblaci\u00f3n total del pa\u00eds alcanza 3.405.813 habitantes. La poblaci\u00f3n ind\u00edgena es de 318.059 personas y representan 9.34% de la poblaci\u00f3n nacional, que pertenecen a 7 pueblos: Kuna, Ember\u00e1, Wounaan, Naso o Teribe, Ngobe, Bugl\u00e9 y Bribris.<\/p>\n
Los territorios ind\u00edgenas son conocidos como Comarcas, tres de las cuales tienen categor\u00eda de provincias (Kuna Yala, Ember\u00e1 Wounaan, Ng\u00e4be Bugl\u00e9) y concentran al 63% de la poblaci\u00f3n ind\u00edgena; otras dos, m\u00e1s peque\u00f1as, tienen categor\u00eda de corregimientos (Kuna de Madugand\u00ed y Kuna de Wargand\u00ed). El modelo de Comarcas Ind\u00edgenas, proporciona un alto nivel de institucionalidad y representaci\u00f3n, y constituye una experiencia pionera de territorialidad ind\u00edgena en Am\u00e9rica Latina.<\/p>\n
Pero tambi\u00e9n fuera de las comarcas, existe poblaci\u00f3n ind\u00edgena que habita en las provincias. La propiedad de esas Tierras Colectivas por parte de las familias ind\u00edgenas, ha sido reconocida mediante la Ley 411 de 2008. Tal es el caso de 40 comunidades Ember\u00e1-Wounaan que se encontraban fuera de la Comarca del mismo nombre; y que constituyeron un Congreso General de Tierras Comunales, como organizaci\u00f3n representativa tradicional.<\/p>\n
En todo el pa\u00eds existen 65 \u00c1reas Protegidas, que conforman el Sistema Nacional de \u00c1reas Protegidas (SINAP) creado por la Autoridad Nacional del Ambiente (ANAM). Las \u00c1reas Protegidas representan 34.4% del territorio nacional (26.000 km2). Ocho de estas \u00e1reas se ubican en la zona del Dari\u00e9n, y se superponen con los territorios ind\u00edgenas. La m\u00e1s grande es el Parque Nacional Dari\u00e9n que con 560.000 has se configura como el \u00c1rea Protegida de mayor superficie en todo Centroam\u00e9rica y el Caribe.<\/p>\n
